Jalanan
A film about Indonesia, street music, love, prison, politics, sex, corruption, rice fields, globalisation and heart-ache.
Wednesday 6th August 2014
I excitedly headed off to see 'Jalanan' (Streetside) - a music documentary created by Canadian writer/filmmaker/producer Daniel Ziv & Editor Ernest Haryanto; Australia's premiere of the documentary and a Q&A session at the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF)...and although I had high expectations of this documentary, as I had viewed the trailers and read some reviews (Jalanan won Best Documentary at the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea in 2013) ...my expectations were highly exceeded.

ART|JOG|2014 - Legacies of Power PART I
A new morning... and the first day in Yogya... anxious to get to the famous art fair...a few distractions along the way but got there eventually.
This years theme for ART|JOG|2014 was entitled; 'Legacies of Power' with a focus on 2014, as its a political year for Indonesia, as Indonesians have just undergone the major task of a general election - a democratic process of electing a new leader, a new president, to be chosen for their country.
'Legacies of Power' endeavours to discuss democracy by looking back at the various types of power struggles in Indonesia. Believing that in order to look forward, one (being the nation of Indonesia) must understand the past.

June Journey to Indonesia 2014
It was that time of year again...time to escape Melbourne winter for a little bit and head to where the sun shines warm and bright, and the blue skies and oceans are endless...where the smells of kretek (clove cigarettes), incense and satay smoke make your senses come alive...and your ears awaken to the tinkling of the gamelan, a rooster calling out, the call to prayer from the local Mosque/s or maybe even a blast of 'dangdut' playing on your neighbours stereo! Ahhh the sights, sounds and smells of Indonesia! Time to let my second language flow and integrate myself in the cultures that I love! Yes, time for a June Journey to Indonesia...and this was the itinerary for the short escape - Bali, Yogyakarta - Central Java & 'The Gili's'- Lombok.

Kesenian tawar-menawar!
Kesenian tawar-menawar memang kesenian yang unik dan penuh tradisi di Indonesia.
Many friends ask me, before heading off on a holiday to Indonesia, what are my best tips and tricks for bargaining in Indonesia. This is not something that can be easily answered...as situations vary drastically from city to village and island to island in Indonesia. It can also depend on the goods and/or services available at that time and place...
Bargaining is a way of life for Indonesians and locals haggle for goods and services everywhere from street stalls and markets to hotels. There's always a bargain to be found!

Cita-citaku
Akhir-akhir ini saya mulai banyak memikirkan soal masa depan dan karierku akan jalan ke mana? Aku sering melamun dan tanya diri sendiri; Apa yang aku inginkan? ... Apa aspirasiku sekarang? ... Apa tujuan hidupku? ... Apa yang aku lakukan di langkah depan?

Binturong
A new encounter and fascination with an animal that I came across at "Taman Safari - Bali" - the Binturong!
I'm not quite sure how this adorable looking animal escaped my attention or my knowledge over the years, but as soon as I saw it and learnt that it was a 'Binturong', I couldn't wait to start researching and finding out more about this beautiful furry creature!
Pulau Derawan - 2nd time round!
Before I ventured on the 'July Journey', for months
I had been dreaming about going back to Pulau Derawan, a small island off
Kalimantan that I had visited in 2011 and had absolutely adored! Unfortunately it wasn't the paradise that I had met the first time round.

| Pulau Derawan sunrise will always be beautiful...but as locals and developers build more and more bungalows on stilts in the water...unfortunately the natural beauty is tainted. |

ART|JOG|13
One very hot day whilst wandering the alleys down by the river in Yogya...I was following the street art and taking photos...and eventually stumbled across (well, I had read about it but it had totally gone out of my mind....there is soooo much to see and do in Yogya!) the ART|JOG|13 - Art Jogja (previously Jogja Art Fair) 2013 - Maritime Culture - Budaya Maritim exhibition at the Taman Budaya Yogyakarta.
Candi Prambanan & Princess Loro Jonggrang
Sunrise overlooking Borobudur!
Sunrise overlooking Borobudur entailed a 4am pick-up from the hotel lobby...hmmm...this had to be done if I was going to get that postcard perfect shot of Borobudur in the rays of first light!
Borobudur...Candi Borobudur - Borobudur temple...Vihara Buddha Uhr - Buddhist Monastery on the Hill...Budhara - Mountain having terraces...Budur - site of ancient monuments...the temple has had many names but no one can deny the monument of its spectacular architecture.
When in Yogya...go for a becak ride!
When in Yogya...go for a becak ride!
And so began a crazy becak ride...there always seems to be some element of confusion when it comes to my travel stories! Is it just me!? :/
But what else does one do in Yogya...? A crazy beck ride must be on the itinerary! ;)

July Journey (2013) - from Bali to Yogya
Less than 5 days off the plane and back in Melbourne and I'm already searching Garuda flights and studying the map of Indonesia once again! Gila! Making plans of where I want to go next! The next dream island! When that next journey is, I don't know but I hope it's sooner rather than later! ;)
*This is the beginnings of my July journey...

'Monkey Magic' - Book Review
I won a book on Twitter :)
...I randomly followed some prompts and found that I was one of three to win a book called 'Monkey Magic - The curse of Mukada' by Grant S. Clark.
It's a children's book that takes the reader on a journey to the jungles of Borneo.

Seniwati Gallery of Art by Women - Ubud, Bali
Seniwati - made up of two words - 'seni' meaning 'art' and 'wati' meaning 'women', isn't just an art gallery...

Endangered Green Sea Turtles - Turtle Foundation
After my experience with the beautiful Green Sea Turtles on Pulau Derawan, which included snorkling and swimming with the turtles, feeding them banana leaves, watching a turtle lay her eggs on the beach, watching the baby turtles hatch out of their eggs and releasing the baby turtles to swim out to sea, I started doing some more research on these amazing creatures that can be found in the beautiful, serene Derawan archipelago!
