Endangered Green Sea Turtles - Turtle Foundation

After my experience with the beautiful Green Sea Turtles on Pulau Derawan, which included snorkling and swimming with the turtles, feeding them banana leaves, watching a turtle lay her eggs on the beach, watching the baby turtles hatch out of their eggs and releasing the baby turtles to swim out to sea, I started doing some more research on these amazing creatures that can be found in the beautiful, serene Derawan archipelago!


Six out of seven of the world's species of turtles are found in Indonesia! These are; Green Sea Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle, Loggerhead Turtle, Leatherback Turtle, Olive Ridley Turtle and the Flatback Turtle.

There are various conservation organisations that are focussing their work on protecting endangered animals across Indonesia, and this includes; the Derawan archipelago.

The Turtle Foundation are running successful projects in the Derawan archipelago, this includes Pulau Derawan, Pulau Maratua, Pulau Sangalaki and Pulau Kakaban. This area has been listed as one of the most important ecological "Hotspots" on Earth!

The Derawan archipelago is home to one of the largest sea turtle populations in the world and is the largest nesting site for the endangered Green Sea Turtles. UNESCO is even considering declaring the area as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in the near future!
