Jalanan

A film about Indonesia, street music, love, prison, politics, sex, corruption, rice fields, globalisation and heart-ache.

Wednesday 6th August 2014

I excitedly headed off to see 'Jalanan' (Streetside) - a music documentary created by Canadian writer/filmmaker/producer Daniel Ziv & Editor Ernest Haryanto; Australia's premiere of the documentary and a Q&A session at the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF)...and although I had high expectations of this documentary, as I had viewed the trailers and read some reviews (Jalanan won Best Documentary at the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea in 2013) ...my expectations were highly exceeded.

ART|JOG|2014 - Legacies of Power PART I

A new morning... and the first day in Yogya... anxious to get to the famous art fair...a few distractions along the way but got there eventually.

This years theme for ART|JOG|2014 was entitled; 'Legacies of Power' with a focus on 2014, as its a political year for Indonesia, as Indonesians have just undergone the major task of a general election - a democratic process of electing a new leader, a new president, to be chosen for their country.

'Legacies of Power' endeavours to discuss democracy by looking back at the various types of power struggles in Indonesia. Believing that in order to look forward, one (being the nation of Indonesia) must understand the past.

June Journey to Indonesia 2014

It was that time of year again...time to escape Melbourne winter for a little bit and head to where the sun shines warm and bright, and the blue skies and oceans are endless...where the smells of kretek (clove cigarettes), incense and satay smoke make your senses come alive...and your ears awaken to the tinkling of the gamelan, a rooster calling out, the call to prayer from the local Mosque/s or maybe even a blast of 'dangdut' playing on your neighbours stereo! Ahhh the sights, sounds and smells of Indonesia! Time to let my second language flow and integrate myself in the cultures that I love! Yes, time for a June Journey to Indonesia...and this was the itinerary for the short escape - Bali, Yogyakarta - Central Java & 'The Gili's'- Lombok.

Kesenian tawar-menawar!

Kesenian tawar-menawar memang kesenian yang unik dan penuh tradisi di Indonesia.

Many friends ask me, before heading off on a holiday to Indonesia, what are my best tips and tricks for bargaining in Indonesia. This is not something that can be easily answered...as situations vary drastically from city to village and island to island in Indonesia. It can also depend on the goods and/or services available at that time and place...

Bargaining is a way of life for Indonesians and locals haggle for goods and services everywhere from street stalls and markets to hotels. There's always a bargain to be found!

Cita-citaku

Akhir-akhir ini saya mulai banyak memikirkan soal masa depan dan karierku akan jalan ke mana? Aku sering melamun dan tanya diri sendiri; Apa yang aku inginkan? ... Apa aspirasiku sekarang? ... Apa tujuan hidupku? ... Apa yang aku lakukan di langkah depan?
